The Non-Veggie Ingredients Quiz Answers

Below you will find the source of each of the ingredients in the quiz and a few places where you're likely to find them but this is by no means a complete list. Also, all of these ingredients can be replaced by other veggie-friendly versions which may have the same name. Seek further advice at www.vegsoc.org 

GELATINE is an edible glue and setting agent made from the bones and hooves of slaughted animals. It's used in jellies, desserts and sweets such as Haribo. Also known as: gelatin.
COCHINEAL is a food colouring made from (yuk!) crushed insects. You need to watch out for it in anything coloured red or pink including jelly, sweets and icing. Also known as: E120 and carmine.
RENNET is an enzyme taken from the stomach of slaughtered calves which is used in cheese making. It also turns up in some cheese flavoured crisps and snacks.
SUET is a type of animal fat. It is taken from around the internal organs of slaughtered animals and used in pies and pastries. Animal fat also turns up in biscuits, cakes and ice cream.
CHITIN comes from crab and insect shells (including snails!) It is often found in cosmetics and shampoo.
KERATIN comes from the hooves, horns and bones of slaughtered animals and is used in many haircare products including dyes and gels.
TALLOW is fat which has been boiled off slaughtered animals' carcasses and allowed to harden. It is often used in soap and candles.
