What is VegSoc

'VegSoc' is the abbreviated name of the Vegetarian Society. The Vegetarian Society exists to promote vegetarianism and to assist existing vegetarians in a number of ways. They produce a wide variety of information packs and guides and useful resources for schools. They run a successful school speaker service and a vegetarian cookery school and organise 'National Vegetarian Week' every year. The Vegetarian Society also created the Seedling Symbol.

The Seedling Symbol (pictured below) appeares on many food products and other non-edible items. The Vegetarian Society only endorses products with it if it meets several conditions which are strictly adhered to. A product must:

  • Be free from animal flesh (meat and fish), meat or bone stock,
carcass fat, gelatine, aspic or other slaughterhouse by-products.
  • Be free from GM ingredients and contain only free-range eggs.
  • Have not been contaminated by non veggie ingredients.
  • Have not been tested on animals.
