Viva! (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals) was founded in 1994 by experienced animal rights campaigner Juliet Gellatley. It is an active vegetarian and vegan organisation which campaigns for animal rights on a range of issues and promotes a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. The highlight of each year is the 'Incredible Veggie Roadshow' which tours the UK raising awareness of their cause and providing a unnique opportunity for people to talk face-to-face with experts in vegetarian and vegan nutrition. The 'Incredible Veggie Roadshow' visits around ten locations a year, usually between June and November. Each 'Show' varies in size according to the capacity and location of the venue but all are usually well attended and have something to offfer for everyone. In 2006, the 'Show' visited York and I volunteered there on the campaigns stall but even if you can't volunteer and (like me) you have some way to travel to your nearest show, it is well worth going. Viva! runs a highly successful membership scheme offering many different types of membership costing different amounts. The cheapest membership (under 16's only) is £5 per year and members are known as 'Activists'. For a one-off payment of £200 you can become a life member but there are many memberships in between including 'Friend', 'Supporter' and 'Star Supporter'. Each membership has different benefits but all 'Activists' receive the youth magazine Viva!Active and all adult members, whatever their membership type, receive the magazine Viva!Life.
